"Honestly... it's the first thing that I've been honestly interested in for awhile." She added with a light sigh.

"And... ask whatever you want." She then said. "I... you won't jinx anything. I owe you answers anyway." That was probably the most she'd said since the lockdown.

"............" Lex was silent for a moment, before lowering his head slightly.

"...why...?" he asked.

"Why have you shut down like this?" he asked her.

"I know I failed to protect you that day. I know I've failed to come up with a solution to this issue." he went on.

"I know it must be hard to have your mana shut down." he said further.

"...but... but is that why you've shut down? Why you're letting your health degrade?" he asked her.

"Does it all spawn from that day?"

Madison was silent for a moemnt before sighing.

".... You try going through that." She said, her voice flat.

"It really ain't fun." She then added before sighing.

"But... I don't feel whole. I honestly feel like I lost a huge part of myself." She continued, not meeting his gaze. "You didn't fail me... I failed myself. I couldn't get out of there. I couldn't figure out what the hell it is that happened, I couldn't stop any of it, and I couldn't even hope to try."

"I just... in that one swift moment, I may have walked away with my life... but I lost my best friends." Her voice was quiet.

"I couldn't... can't... deal with that."

He... it hadn't truly clicked for him.

Her best friends... Gregory... Cleo... she was now cut off from them.

'....how could I have been so blind!?' he mentally scolded himself.

"I..." he stammered.

"I can try and help you reach them." he said.

"I can use my own mana to create an area where you might be able to converse with them."

"Thabks... But.... I'd rather not." She said simply.

"I... Know that they've been around... Cleo has nothing going on after all... And I've left notes for them. Explaining what's going on...." She sighed here. It wasn't hard to tell that all this was definitely not easy for her.

'...well, that was another dead end.' he thought.

'Is there truly nothing I can do?' he asked himself, biting his lip slightly.

He then took a bit of the food he'd been given.

"...quite good." he complimented her, taking another bite.

". . . Thanks." Madison said after a moment or two.

"I... it's been awhile since I've done... thought I might..." She added before sighing lightly.

"There's plenty in the fridge too... so Aimee can have some when she gets home. Or if Yuri wants any." There may have been more life to what she was saying, but there was definitely a certain flatness that couldn't be denied.

"I'm sure they'll appreciate it." Lex replied.

"Thank you." he told her.

"....." he was then silent, pondering what she was saying, and how she was saying it.

There was more life in her tone, but... it still wasn't much.

At all.

He then paused for a moment, getting an idea.

"Ah." he said.

"The dig is in Egypt, right?" he asked.

"Ancient Egypt was steeped in mana, especially mana involved with the dead. If you're accepted, you may find a clue as to how to unlock your mana?" he suggested, hoping that would give her some hope again.

"That... crossed my mind." She then admitted.

"But... but at the same time, I know I can't have that be the only reason I'm going. I'll never be accepted at that rate." She added before sighing.

"But... at the same time... I can't lie and say that's not part of the reason I want to go. Moreso though... I want to see something for the world that Cleo came from."

Again, Lex sighed.

"Yeah." he said.

"However, you need to figure out what your primary reason for going is." he told her.

"If it's just for the mama, then Aimee and I can try and arrange something." he continued.

"But. If this is truly something you want to do. Something you want to experience. Something you want to learn... then pour your heart into those papers, and I'll submit them for you." he went on.

"Who knows, the sooner you submit them, the sooner you may hear back."

"If you'd rather be in your room, go on to it. Don't force yourself to interact with me or anything."

"I..." She started.

"I'm sorry." She added. Sincerity to her voice.

"No need for you to be dragged down even further by me." he added, looking at her and forcing a smile.

Madison hesitated a moment before making her way over to Lex and just hugging him. It was the first time she'd done anything of the sort in quite awhile.

"I'm sorry, Alex..." She said quietly.

"I never... I didn't mean to shut you out... but..." She fell silent, not able to say anything more for the moment. She couldn't think of anything more to say. She just held fast, and didn't let got for close to a minute before stepping back. She didn't say anything more before heading off, not knowing what to say, and knowing that she probably couldn't hang around there either.

Alex managed to return the embrace before she let go, and then watched her leave the room... before lowering his head a little, and trying not to cry.

"...I'm sorry..." he whispered.

"I... this..." he stammered further, before catching his breath in his throat.

He looked at the food in front of him... before slowly continuing to eat, and sob lightly.

She was still in so much pain... but there was nothing he could do.

All he COULD do... was hope that she got accepting to accompany the archaeologist on their dig... and find a clue as to how she could remain whole once more.

"...why did this have to happen...?" he wondered aloud for the... who knew how many time, by now.

About two weeks later, Madison made her way downstairs, looking for Alex. When she finally found him, she was surprised. He wasn't sleeping.

Instead, he was pouring over a book, and as she approached, he looked over.

"Hey..." Madison said, her voice still as hesitant as it was before.

"You... said to bring it to you." She then said as she set a small binder on the desk near his book.

". . . I ... finished it. If you want to read it, go ahead." She added

Lex looked at the binder, and sighed.

"All right." he said.

"I'll give it a quick once-over." he told her.

"Make sure everything's all right." he went on.

He then picked up the binder, and pushed his book ahead a little, setting down the binder where it had been.

"You know, make sure every 'i' is dotted and every 't' is crossed and such." he added.

And with that, he got to reading.

While he was reading, Madison headed off to get him some coffee. She knew he'd likely want some.

It was a couple of months later and Hollie sighed as she stepped up to the door and knocked on it. Or rather, tapped it with the head of her staff. She'd been summoned to ehr brothers to help him with something, but he didn't actually give her any information as to what it was that he wanted help with.

"... wonder if it's what I suspect." she muttered as she waited fo rhim to answer

"Ah, Hollie." he said.

"Thank you for coming." he told her.

"Come in, come in." he went on, stepping out of the way so she could enter.

"Care for some tea?" he asked.

"I have some of that heavenly Egyptian blend from my daughter."
