Rene blinked a couple of times.

"...genetically... a mana hunter..." he said.

He then looked at her... right at her.

"What is it?" he asked.

"What was your line 'blessed' with?" he asked her.

"What 'gift' did you receive?"

Rene paused when she said that.

"....what?" he asked.

"At... war with yourself?" he asked further.

"How... how do you mean?" he asked her.

"You mean mentally? Because you're the child of a hunter, and have mana...?" he continued.

He had a feeling there was more to it than that... but what did she mean, exactly?

Where was this going?

"....ah..." Rene stammered.

"Huh." he said.

"I... I see." he said further.

"Well... I can certainly understand being hunted because of genetics." he told her.

"Literally, as well." he continued.

"But... a mage that's the child of a hunter? Wow." he said further.

"That IS a rarity."

Rene froze for a moment.

"Uh..." he stammered.

"Wait, what?" he asked.

"Ok, admittedly, I don't know much about your past, and I've only recently become your family doctor, but... what?" he continued.

"With a hunter?" he asked her.

"You're the child of a hunter?"

"It should." Rene replied.

"And try to refrain from any intensive breathing." he told her.

"It'll hurt." he said.

"....but you already know that." he then muttered.

"Regardless, I'll get you up and about in... 30 minutes or so." he then said further.

"...I'm sorry this happened." he added quietly.

"....knew you'd say that." Rene said.

"We'll find a place to put you up." he told her.

"Somewhere they won't think to look." he went on.

"And I'll do my best to make the paper trail an impenetrable maze." he promised.

"Or... well, Kalin will." he corrected himself.

"She's amazing at that."

"....." Rene was silent as he worked, but she could tell something was weighing on his mind.

"Hm." he mumbled.

"Do you want to stay with Kalin and me?" he asked.

"We have plenty of room." he offered.

"Or we can put you up temporarily in a hotel somewhere." he offered further.

"If you'd feel safer."

"............" Rene was silent for a long moment, before sighing.

"All right." he said.

"I got it." he told her.

"No stooping to their level and no going out of my way and blah blah blah." he muttered... though he was already starting to make plans in his mind.

"Anyway!" he then said.

"I need to mend you up so you CAN deal with just homecare." he told her.

Rene sighed again.

"I... don't want it to come to that again." he said.

"It's not good to live your life on the run." he told her.

"I REALLY wish you'd let me deal with this problem." he then said.

"Leave it to me, and I'll make sure they never bother you again." he continued.

"Permanently." he finished, finality and darkness to his tone.

Ryker flinched when he heard that.

"Ah. Well..." he stammered.

"That's... that's sensual!" he said.

"Not adorable!" he insisted.

"......" he was then silent, before sighing.

"Ok, I have no defense." he admitted.

Rene nodded in response.

"I understand." he said.

"And I think you're right." he told her.

"If this had been one of your usual shows, your head may very well be caved in right now." he sighed.

"But they probably felt they had to act, and act now." he continued.

"...for some reason." he mumbled.

"Regardless, I'm glad that you seem to get along with Jaden." he added.

"Sadly." Rene lamented.

"I hate that, too." he said.

"You'd think a hospital would be one of the safest places for you." he continued.

"But no. You're in more danger than ever in one." he went on.

"Just... damn it all." he growled.

"....anyway. Onto a lighter topic." he then said.

"Up until the end, how was your experience with Jaden?" he asked her.

Rene just pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Urf." he grumbled.

"No." he said.

"But I'm not talking about carelessness here." he told her.

"I'm talking about a .01% chance that there was no malice behind this." he said further.

"...but I know." he muttered.

"We both know." he sighed.

Rene just shook his head.

"I don't know." he said.

"I don't know how they managed." he admitted.

"But we'll do all we can to protect you." he continued.

"Or try, anyway." he clarified.

"...but this COULD have been a freak accident." he then brought up.

"Highly unlikely, I know... but still."
