Jake followed Sydney to the door, and was silent as she knocked.

There was silence on the other side of the door as well, until a small panel opened, and a pair of eyes looked out.

"Oh." the person they belonged to said.

"It's you." they said further, looking at Sydney.

"What do you want?" they asked.

"Just to pester me again?"

Ryker raised an eyebrow as he saw Eke walking towards a hotel.

'Eh?' he thought.

'All right.........' he thought further.

"Well, I'm gonna try and swipe some meat ASAP." he told Eke.

"I should be able to snatch some and get away." he chuckled.

Jake looked at the portal that formed in the trunk of the tree, and nodded.

"Right." he said.

He took a couple of breaths, before making his way towards it. He paused at it for a second, looked back at Sydney, and then towards the portal once more.

"Here goes." he said with a shrug.

Then, without further delay, he leapt into the portal, bracing himself.

As soon as he did that, he felt like his insides were being twisted and knotted around, but before he could fully 'comprehend' what was happening, he landed on his feet, almost falling to the floor.

'Where am I?' he thought, looking around.

He noticed that he was outside, with an impressive and imposing structure of a building before him. However, that was not what caught his attention the most.

What caught it was the fact that a lush and beautiful forest was spread out before him, surrounding the building before him.

"....nice." he said quietly.

Jake just smirked.

"I can handle it." he told her.

"I'm a hardy individual." he said confidently.

"So let's be off." he said further, bringing a hand to his ear.

"...I hear some commotion coming this way." he told her. "Probably some people heard the commotion and might be coming to investigate." he reasoned.

"So we should make ourselves scarce."

"I'll take whatever I can get." the man sighed as he got closer.

"And... well... call me Jake." he then told Sydney. "It's not my 'real' name per se, but my real name involves using a forked tongue to make a sound that is borderline impossible to replicate." he admitted.

"Jake's the closest to it." he went on.

"Nice to meet you, though, Sydney." he told her.

"We heading back the same way you caused that brute of a beast to disappear?" he asked.

Ryker was immediately at his side when he said that.

"That's not good." he said.

"How so?" he asked.

"Is it the hunger? Or something else?" he asked further.

"There anything I can do to help?"

The man just shrugged.

"Somewhere... I... I don't know, actually." he admitted.

"I'm homeless, jobless, and on the run from humans." he said.

"...it's such a shame and a disgrace." he sighed.

"I really don't bring much glory to my Ramaarin heritage." he lamented, letting slip his heritage. The Ramarrins were a race of reptilian humanoids, which humans got along with in the past... but as time went on, prejudice took over, and they became loathed and fears.

They now lived among humans, disguised as them, trying to disappear into the crowds, essentially.

The man paused for a moment, thinking about something.

"Ah!" he said, snapping his fingers.

"I've heard that name before." he said.

"....both in positive AND negative ways, actually." he then muttered.

"I generally hear impressive things, though." he continued. "The fact that you work for Candentus Lux is a feather in one's cap, supposedly."

"....vampire, huh?" he asked.

"Cool." he said.

"And... your boss is out to see you die?" he then asked.

"That... doesn't sound like much of a way to live." he commented further.

"What do you do?"

He just sighed in relief.

"Thank heavens." he thought.

"I'm tired of being on the run." he said.

"Regardless, glad I could help with that beast." he told her.

"You looked like you needed it, despite doing pretty damn well." he said further.

"...and no. I'm not going to try and kill you." he then added, figuring it went without saying, but some clarification was always good.

"Never mind." he replied.

"Just... I'm used to people trying to kill me." he said.

"Guess it's because I'm different." he went on.

He then sighed again, and looked at her... the woman seeing his reptilian eyes.

"I assume you can tell what I'm talking about."

"Sure thing." Ryker replied.

"You want to stay out of sight or not?" he asked.

"I should be able to swipe some meat from... well, either the local butcher, or a grocery store." he told him.

"I'm quick enough." he laughed.

"Want anything in specific?" he then asked.

He was silent for a moment, and just sighed.

"Not kill me would be a good start." he replied.

"Seems no matter where I go, people want me dead." he said further, still catching his breath.

"But as long as you don't attack me or anything, we're fine." he assured her.

He then sat back and sighed, the woman swearing she saw rows of sharp teeth in his mouth.
