Ryker remained silent and sighed again.

He then climbed onto Eke's back, and looked skyward.

"Ok. I'm ready." he said.

"Let's go." he told him.

'....wonder if I'm going to lose him...' he then thought.

'Oh well. If Eke goes, I have my backup plans.' he reasoned with a small shrug.

Darrel just shrugged.

"Sure." he replied.

"First impressions are overrated anyway." he chuckled.

"Onwards!" Evan then declared.

"To food!" he finished.

And... as is so often with those that brim with enthusiastic youth...

Their future.

"................................." Ryker was silent for a long moment, before looking around.

"Uh... right." he said.

'The hell's up with his damn metabolism...?' he wondered.

'This is... concerning.' he thought further.

"I'm good to go when you are." he told him.

"We should scram on outta this cabin, anyway." he reasoned with a sigh.

Darrel just sighed.

"Evan and I have been best friends for a while." he replied.

"We just... yeah, that's all there is to it." he said.

"No real special story, no amazing coincidences, no against-all-odds kinda thing... we just met and ended up being really good friends." he told him.

"Helps that your parents and my parents are so close." Evan added.

"That, too." Darrel agreed.

Evan just laughed in response.

"You really need to turn down that vampiric charm of yours, Darrel." he said, as they started to walk.

"You know I can't!" Darrel replied. "I wish I could, it drives me nuts that I'm surrounded by brain-dead bimbos that think they have a chance with me because they peaked at age 15." he growled.

"I know, I know." Evan responded.

"You'd think they'd take the hint with how lovey-dovey you are with my sister." he chuckled.

"Oh my god, YES." Darrel replied enthusiastically.

"Wouldn't have mattered if it was your treat or not, YES." he said.

"Woah." Evan muttered. "Didn't quite expect THAT level of enthusiasm." he admitted.

Darrel just sighed and shook his head.

"I'm getting tired of the school pushing me forward as a spokesman for this stuff." Darrel replied. "I'm already valedictorian, among other things, so I need a BREAK." he told them.

"What about you, Sammy?" Evan asked his sister.

"Huh? Ask him? Who?" Darrel asked as Sammy grabbed the griffin and headed off.

"....uhhhh. Hm." he mumbled.

He then looked around and quickly followed Sammy, as they made their way out to where Blair and Evan were.

"Ohhhh, THAT'S what landed on my head." Darrel said when he caught up to them.

"A messenger, so to speak." Evan responded.

"Ahhh." Darrel replied.

"...so what's up?" he then asked them.

"His Dad?" Darrel asked.

"What happened with his Dad?" he asked further.

But before Sammy could even answer, the little griffin landed squarely on Darrel's head... not unnoticed by Sammy.

"Right, question." he then said.

"More immediate concerns, what just landed on my head?" he asked her.

"And is this something I need to be concerned about?" he asked further.

A few minutes later, Ryker stirred, and rose to a sitting position.

"Ngh." he grunted.

"Mornings seem to come earlier and earlier, regardless of the season."' he muttered.

He then looked over towards Eke, and smiled.

"Good morning." he greeted.

"Breakfast of champions." he then chuckled, looking at the cake.

"Woah." Evan said.

"That is really cool." he told him.

"...and really rare as well." he added.

"But still... yeah, super cool." he reiterated.

Meanwhile, inside, Darrel was talking with Sammy, and sighed after he'd explained what happened.

"Teach me to not think about what I say." he said to her, ending the story.

"At least he seems like he's not mad at me." he added, referring to Blair.

"That's... really friggin' cool." Evan replied.

"...wait..." he then muttered.

"You did that yourself? As in, caused it to move about and such?" he asked.

Blair nodded in response.

"............huh." Evan mumbled after a long pause.

"I didn't know you were a mage, yourself." he admitted.

As soon Ryker felt the tail curl around him, he smiled softly.

'Heh.' he thought.

'Always gives him some comfort.' he thought further.

'........me, too.' he then admitted, before exhaling slowly,

He then closed his eyes, and went to sleep, the two of them sharing a peaceful night... until the rising sun shone beams of light through the window, illuminating their faces.

"..............." Evan was silent as he watched the griffin take off.

"Ah." he said.

"Uh... hm." he muttered.

"Right, question." he said.

"What... what is up with that?" he asked him.

"Is that... one of the statuettes you've made?" he asked further.

"And is it you that caused it to move like that?"

".........don't feel like you have to." Evan said.

"But I won't stop you if you do." he said further.

"That's... yeah, that's about it, actually." he added with a bit of a shrug and a smirk.

"I'll sit out here on the steps and wait for you." he told him.

"Unless you want me in there with you."
