"I'll bet." Lindsay replied.

"You persevered, and powered through the pain." he told her.

"And it seems like you'll be okay in the long run." he went on.

He then smiled, and sighed.

"I'm proud of you." he said.

"Congratulations on the scholarship."

Darrell just sighed.

"All there is to do is wait and see." he told her.

"Just call if you want or need anything." he then said further.

-About an hour later-

She was still lying in bed, when there was a knock on her door, and her father stepped through.

"Samantha." he greeted her.

"I see you're paying the price for what you did." he went on.

"Are you all right?" he asked.

"Still." Darrell replied.

"That was truly selfless." he told her.

"I just hope your parents understand." he continued.

He then looked at Kitt, who let out a low sound... but not a growl... before she laid her head down and closed her eyes.

"Huh." he mumbled.

"First time she's ever closed her eyes like that in my presence."

Darrell was silent for a moment, before his face turned red.

"Ah... ah-hah..." he chuckled nervously.

"Th-thanks." he stammered.

"Also... I'm impressed." he then said.

"Through all that pain, you almost had it... and then let HIM have it." he went on.

"That's... really amazing." he continued.

"You're an awesome person."

Evan nodded.

"Lemme know if there's anything I can get you." he told her, before leaving.

Shortly after that, Darrell came in to see her, with Kitt growling slightly, but not making any moves.

"Hey." he said to Sammy.

"How are you feeling?" he asked.

"Better than before, I hope."

Again, Evan sighed.

"Yeah." he said.

"I... well, I'll just... leave you be." he told her.

"I'm glad you seem to be all right." he went on.

"...odds are it'll be Dad seeing you before Mom." he continued.

"He IS still in the country right now, after all." he chuckled.

Evan just sighed.

"I remember that this was THE chance for him..." he said.

"From all you've mentioned in the past." he continued.

"I..." he then stammered, before just looking off to the side.

Sammy could see that he was feeling... conflicted. But it was mostly to do with himself. He was wondering if he would have been able to do what she did, give up something when one worked so hard for it.

"...pretty sure even Mom won't be able to get mad at you for this." he commented.

"....Jack....?" Evan muttered, before thinking about it.

"Jack... Redmond?" he asked further.

She nodded in response.

"....oh..." Evan muttered.

"I... thought he wasn't able to compete." he went on.

"...damn..." he mumbled, all the wind having left his sails now.

"I... just... damn..." was all he could get out.

"......" Evan was silent, and his mouth dropped.

"You... you what?" he asked.

"You gave it up...?" he asked her.

"You went to hell and back for it... and gave it up!?" he then exclaimed.

"But... but why!?" he asked her.

"Why did you just give it up!?"

Evan just smirked.

"Heh." he chuckled.

"Awesome." he said.

"Glad to hear that it was worth it." he told her.

"And congrats." he said further.

"You'll be making it through Uni all on your own." he continued.

"After all this pain and suffering, it's the least you deserve." he added with a thumbs-up, genuine happiness in his tone.

After a bit, she heard some footsteps, and looked towards the doorway. She saw Evan and Kitt, and they both entered.

Kitt made her way to the side of the bed, and laid down against it, so Sammy could let her arm hang down and pet her head if he wanted to.

Evan just sighed.

"So." he said.

"How ya doing?" he asked.

"How ya feeling?" he asked further.

"You looked pretty bad when you got here..." he added, concern in his tone.

No sooner had she said that, did Rene snap his finger and a bubble of water formed under her, causing her to gently fall into it, like a water bed.

"All right." he said.

"Come on." he told her.

"YOU." he then said to Darrell. "Are in charge of fielding any questions about her and all this." he continued.

"Got it." Darrell replied.

"There anything I can do for her in the time being?" he asked.

"Nope." Rene responded, as he and Sammy started to make their way out of the room.

"....." Rene was silent, raising an eyebrow.

"Uh... huh." he said.

"Right." he muttered.

"Anyway, I'm taking you to the bathroom, where I can have a more sterile environment." he told her.

"You back off." he told Darrell.

"Right." Darrell replied, taking a step back.

"You are going to be out of commission for a while, little lady." he then warned Sammy.

"Great." Rene said.

"WELP. Time to get you outta the woods." he told her.

"Tell me you won, at least." he continued.

"You risked your life to do this, it seems." he went on.

"Tell me this wasn't a complete waste." he continued, unpacking his things.

"...." Darrell was silent, unsure of what to say here.
