Not much more was said between the two of them, before Rene appeared.

"The hell happened?" he asked.

"40 minute delay before the race." Darrell responded.

"She crashed partway through the race, but... kept going until she crossed the finish line." he added.

"Terrific." Rene growled.

"Samantha." he then addressed Sammy.

"How badly are you hurting right now?" he asked her.

"Right." Darrell said, before looking to where he wound was... and smelling the blood that looked like it was threatening to soak through her shirt.

He then sighed, and took off his own shirt.

"Here." he said.

"Stuff this over your wound." he told her.

"It's black, so it shouldn't stain." he reasoned.

"And you need SOMETHING to sop up the blood." he went on.

"At least until Rene gets here." he added.

"....probably." Darrell replied.

"HEY!" Evan called to them from where he was.

"UNCLE RENE'LL BE HERE IN A COUPLE MINUTES TO SAVE YOUR LIFE!" he called to Sammy.

He then disappeared into the house.

Darrell was about to say something, when they noticed Kitt come sniffing about from inside the house.

"....oh no..." Darrell mumbled.

".........." Evan was silent, her wording not missing him.

"Uh-huh." he said, receiving a text.

"He'll be here, soon." he told her.

"I'll tell him you're out here dying." he finished, before walking away.

"...seems harsh..." Darrell muttered.

And it was... but Sammy knew that this was sometimes Evan's way of being overly concerned for her... while still being at war with his testosterone, and feeling the need to be 'strong'.

Evan just sighed.

"Well, fancy that." he said.

"All right, I'll text Uncle Rene." he told her.

He had a bit of a tone to his voice that showed he wasn't surprised, and there was some disappointment to it, but it was more like a 'this is what you get' sort of thing.

As he texted Rene, he looked at her.

"Did you at least win?" he asked her.

"Was all this pain and suffering at least WORTH something?" he asked further.

"....got it." Darrell responded.

The two of them then made their way to where nobody would see them.

"Where to?" he asked.

"Home." she replied.

The next thing they knew, they were in Sammy's backyard, and Evan had finished playing with Kitt.

And he saw them appear.

"....Sammy!?" he exclaimed.

"Oh geez, what happened!?" he asked.

Darrell was dumbstruck, before nodding.

"R-right." he said.

He then stepped up and let her lean on him, using him for support.

"Let's go." he told her.

b[]"We need to get you home and get you looked at."[/b] he continued.

"Should I call Dr. Calder and get him to do so?" he asked.

They were stunned, before accepting her hand.

She got them to their feet, and the two of them started to slowly make their way towards the finish line.

As they were doing so, Darrell looked back and narrowed his eyes, sniffing the air slightly. He could see that someone was speeding towards them, but could tell they were using mana to augment their speed.

As such, they suddenly found themselves tripping in a small pothole in the ground, and faceplanting.

"GO!" Darrell yelled out.

"COME ON, YOU TWO!" he shouted, as the cheers started to build once more.

Some of the crowd was still murmuring and cheering, and it looked like a medical team was going to be on its way.

However, Sammy was the only one to hear what they said.

"Damn it." they cursed.

"Not now..." they went on.

"...." they were silent, and then sighed.

"Oh well... at least I tried." they said.

"I'll try and get the money some other way." they muttered, before looking at Sammy.

"Go on. Looks like you're getting the scholarship." they told her, a smile on their face, but sadness in their voice.

The cheering of the crowd was almost deafening now, but Darrell made himself known.

He stretched himself out from the crowd, and took a deep breath.

"GO SAMANTHA!" he yelled.

"YOU'RE ALMOST THERE!" he told her.

"KEEP GOING!" he said further.

"YOU'VE ALMOST GOT IT WON!" he added.

'Please, please, please...' he pleaded internally.

'Please cross the line first...'

Before Darrell had a chance to really formulate a response, she was out of earshot.

"...damn it!" he cursed.

He then turned and ran behind him, forming a portal that took him to the finish line.

When he got threre, he saw many people waiting for the first person to show up... and hit bit his lip.

"...Samantha..." he mumbled.

"I really hope you know what you're doing." he commented.

He then pushed his way through the people, until he was right at the sidelines.

He needed to be ready in case Sammy's prediction came true.

Darrell shook his head.

"No." he replied.

"You're the first." he told her.

He then turned and looked down the road, sniffing it slightly.

"...two things." he said.

"I can smell them approaching. They'll be here within 2 minutes or so." he told her.

"Secondly, the blood smell from you is getting stronger." he added.

".....thirty minutes. Right." Darrell responded.

"You got it..." he told her, accepting the bottle.

He then put it away and watched her run off.

"....right." he muttered.

He then took a step back and fell into a portal, appearing where she would be next.

"30 minutes." he said, checking his watch.

"...finish it, are you SURE?" Darrell asked.

"There's... there's still quite a bit to go." he told her.

"Are you sure you can do this?" he asked her.

"..." he was then silent, and was about to protest even more, when she looked at him... with a look of determination that said 'don't you DARE stop me'.

"Right..." he said.

"Good... good luck." he told her.
